Here is a special woodworking project I took on a few years ago. It was a birthday present for my mom, who is a dedicated Pittsburgh Penguins hockey fan. These Emperor Penguin statues are huge - the adults stand almost waist high. I made them from standard 2 x 12 boards. Three layers gave them a 3-D look. The wings and parts of the babies were made from 1" pine. Before painting them, I sealed the wood with primer, then used two layers of exterior grade enamel. I finished them off with a protective coat of polyurethane. They even had realistic plastic eyes. This was a cool project and fun to build!
I made these a few years ago when the Penguins won the Stanley Cup, and my mom still proudly displays these in front of her flower bed. Go Pens!
Photo shared by Denise Lynch. Her grandfather was an arctic explorer back in the day and I built him a set of the penguins for his birthday. Very cool!
