Here is a special woodworking project I took on a few years ago. It was a birthday present for my mom, who lives in PA and is a dedicated Pittsburgh Penguins hockey fan. These Emperor Penguin statues are huge - the adults stand almost waist high. I made them from standard 2 x 12 boards. Three layers give them a 3-D look. The wings and parts of the babies were made from 1" pine. Before painting them, I sealed the wood with primer, then used two layers of exterior grade enamel. I finished them off with a protective coat of polyurethane. They even had realistic plastic eyes. This was a cool project, and fun to build!
I made these a few years ago when the Penguins won the Stanley Cup, and my mom still proudly displays these in front of her flower bed. What do you think?
